This site deals with Genealogy via Burial Records and Memorials, in their various forms, in the Derwent Valley of North West Durham (this link opens in a new window; to return to this page simply close the new window). These include Burial Registers, Monumental Inscriptions and War Memorials. Also included are other sources, such as out-of-print publications, dealing with the people who have lived and worked here. There are no plans to include cremation records although these are occasionally mentioned in the Burial Records.
The purpose of the site is to make the information from these sources - particularly Burial Records and Monumental Inscriptions - more readily available to anyone researching Genealogy in this area.
Blackhill cemetery is the largest Burial Ground in the area. The first hundred years of these Burial Records (approx. 27,000 records, 1862-1962) giving detailed coverage of Shotley Bridge, Blackhill, Benfieldside, Consett, Delves Lane, Knitsley and Crookhall, as well as numerous references to other areas, are the first records to have been compiled.
The collection and collation of this information is, by its nature, ongoing. The site will be updated on a regular basis as newly collated information becomes available.
Much of the information on the site is freely available as downloadable pdf. files for which you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free software. If it is not already installed on your computer you will be able to obtain a copy from the C.D.s which accompany most computer magazines (recommended), or from Useful Reference Sources. Some of these files are quite large - the size is shown with each one - and, depending on the speed of your connection, may take a while to download; please be patient. An alternative to looking at a blank screen while waiting for them to download and open in your browser is to right-click on the pdf. link, select ‘Save Target As’ and download the file to your desktop. This has the advantage of letting you see how the download is progressing, as well as making the file available for off-line reference.
Feel free to make use of the information here for your own genealogy research, subject only to the copyright restrictions on the files. If you require more detailed information from the Burial Records we can produce reports on Database Searches, based on Surnames and their variants.
